The Middle East aviation sector is demonstrating a strong commitment to both nurturing local talent and spearheading innovation in next-generation air mobility. Bahrain and the UAE are at the forefront of these developments, with Bahrain promoting national professionals to leadership roles and the UAE advancing the certification of eVTOL aircraft.
Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) has elevated five Bahraini professionals to senior positions within its safety and security departments. These appointments underscore the nation’s dedication to empowering its citizens and building a robust aviation ecosystem driven by local expertise. Meanwhile, the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is making significant strides in the regulatory framework for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), positioning itself internationally for the introduction of eVTOL aircraft.
Bahrain’s Investment in Aviation Leadership
Bahrain International Airport (BIA) is set to benefit from the promotion of five Bahraini nationals to key leadership positions. These individuals will now oversee critical functions such as emergency services, aerodrome safety, wildlife management, and security compliance, reinforcing the local capacity for managing complex aviation operations.
Mohamed Yousif Al Sayed, Naser Mohamed Al Mannaie, Ali Adel Al Aseeri, Ahmed Hasan Maiko, and Talal Abdulla Kamal represent a new wave of leadership within BAC. Their advancements reflect a structured approach to succession planning, as noted by Mohamed Mazen Matar, Group Chief People Officer of Gulf Air Group, who highlighted its importance in the company’s transformation agenda.
Ahmed Mohamed Janahi, Acting CEO of BAC, emphasized that empowering national talent is crucial for strengthening Bahrain’s aviation sector. This strategy aligns with Bahrain’s broader national vision to cultivate world-class industries by leveraging domestic skills and knowledge.
UAE Advances Next-Generation Air Mobility
The UAE through the GCAA is actively progressing the certification of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This initiative positions the UAE as a global leader in developing a regulatory framework for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), a critical area for the future of aviation.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, stated that the authority is integrating safety and reliability into its innovation processes. This meticulous approach aims to ensure that new aviation technologies are adopted with the same level of rigor applied to existing oversight systems.
The GCAA’s certification program for eVTOLs includes comprehensive stages from application and technical review to flight testing and operational evaluation. These processes are designed to meet stringent international safety standards, fostering confidence in the emerging technology.
Collaborative Integration of eVTOLs
Multidisciplinary teams within the GCAA are working collaboratively with aircraft manufacturers, other government bodies, and international regulatory agencies. This coordinated effort is essential for the safe and efficient integration of eVTOL technologies into the UAE’s airspace and broader aviation infrastructure.
Furthermore, the GCAA is scheduled to host the UAE Aviation Safety Conference 2025. The event, themed ‘AI and the Future of Aviation Safety: Intelligent Skies, Safer Flights,’ will bring together industry leaders to explore the impact of artificial intelligence on aviation safety and the development of new aviation technologies.
These parallel advancements in Bahrain and the UAE signal a broader regional trend towards modernizing aviation through internal development and technological adoption. The outcomes of the GCAA’s certification efforts and the ongoing development of local leadership at BAC will be key indicators of the region’s trajectory in the evolving global aviation landscape.
