The Milan International Building Alliance (MIBA) 2025 concluded recently, highlighting a critical shift towards sustainable and digital transformations within the building sector. The event, held from November 19-22 at Fiera Milano, saw a record attendance and underscored the growing convergence of physical construction with technological innovation and environmental responsibility.
MIBA 2025 welcomed 85,000 visitors from 112 countries, representing a 5% increase from the previous edition in 2023. The four-day event hosted 1,369 exhibitors across four specialized trade fairs: MADE Expo, SMART BUILDING EXPO, SICUREZZA, and GEE – Global Elevator Exhibition. This diverse gathering positioned MIBA as a key European platform for professionals across construction, architecture, systems engineering, and security.
MIBA 2025: A Focus on Sustainable and Digital Building Transformation
The overarching themes of MIBA 2025 revolved around sustainability, the energy and digital transition, and professional training. These focal points reflect the urgent priorities of the construction industry as it navigates global demands for greener, more technologically advanced, and efficiently managed urban environments.
Sustainability Takes Centre Stage
Discussions surrounding sustainability were prominent across all four exhibitions. A key focus was the exploration of new materials and regulatory frameworks designed to meet the ambitious targets set by the European Union’s green buildings directive. Industry professionals and academics alike emphasized the integration of environmental considerations into the core of building design and construction.
Professor Niccolò Aste from Politecnico di Milano described the event’s atmosphere as embodying the principles of the New European Bauhaus, a European initiative that champions sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusivity. He noted that the Made Sustainable Prize (SusPrize) showcased how innovation can align beauty with responsibility, suggesting this approach has the potential to become the industry’s mainstream model.
Digital Innovation and Electrification as Drivers
Beyond environmental objectives, MIBA 2025 prominently featured the role of digitalization and electrification in driving industry change. Sessions explored advancements in intelligent energy systems, digital monitoring platforms, and innovative building management models. The integration of technology was presented as essential for enhancing building performance and operational efficiency.
Roberto Martino, President of Prosiel, stated that the efficiency, electrification, and digitalization of the existing building stock are significant undertakings for the nation. He characterized MIBA as more than just an exhibition space, but a fertile ground for developing new ideas. According to Martino, creating buildings that are safe, digital, and sustainable is not merely an environmental imperative but also an economic and social one.
Security and Training Complement the Agenda
The event also dedicated considerable attention to security technologies and the crucial need for professional development within the sector. A comprehensive program of over 100 conferences and seminars covered these areas. Notably, Carlo Hruby of the Enzo Hruby Foundation announced a new Advanced Training Course in Cultural Security Management, developed in partnership with the University of Pavia.
Hruby highlighted the importance of investing in specialized training and fostering collaboration between security experts and cultural heritage professionals to ensure adequate protection for cultural sites. He stated that the new course aims to formalize the role of a Cultural Security Manager, equipping individuals with advanced technological knowledge for effective site protection and resource management.
Looking Ahead
MIBA 2025 concluded by underscoring an industry in the midst of profound change, driven by escalating sustainability requirements, the expansion of digital infrastructure, and the evolving demand for specialized skills. The success and focus of this year’s event signal a clear direction for the future of the built environment.
The next edition of the Milan International Building Alliance is scheduled to take place from November 17-19, 2027, at Fiera Milano. Further details regarding specific themes and exhibitor participation for the 2027 event are anticipated closer to the date.
