King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri have partnered to establish a new scholarship program focusing on next-generation security research. This collaboration aims to advance the development of innovative solutions in maritime security and cyber-resilience. The initiative is designed to train young researchers in critical areas of navigation technology.
The program, formally announced at KAUST on December 4, 2025, will provide funding for research into advanced techniques for authenticating Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals and detecting GPS spoofing. This directly addresses threats that could compromise the accuracy of vessel positions and disrupt maritime operations. The collaboration is also intended to support Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives for technological advancement and local capacity building.
Saudi–Italian Programme Focuses on Maritime Security Innovations
The scholarship will concentrate on three key research areas to enhance maritime security. These include developing robust AIS authentication methods to prevent signal manipulation, implementing opportunistic GPS spoofing detection using intelligent satellite data analysis, and improving star-based positioning systems through machine learning algorithms. According to Fincantieri’s official release, the ultimate goal of this research is to create a functional software platform.
